Santa's Workshop store |
2,072 miles
Apr 18 – The
town of Christmas, population about 400, got its start during the Great
Depression. In 1938, a man from Munising
started a roadside factory here to make holiday gift items, and called the place
Christmas. The factory is long gone, but
the community of Christmas grew.
“Come to Christmas, where it's Christmas all year round.”
1966 stamp |
In 1966,
Christmas acquired its first Post Office, and that November the Christmas Post
Office was chosen as the issuing site for the First Day Cover of the 1966
Christmas Stamp.
Many people like to drive to Christmas in the month of December to mail their Christmas cards and presents so they are postmarked coming from Christmas. The ZIP code for the town is 49862.
Christmas Mall store |
Entrepreneurs
in Christmas built a resorts & promoted winter activities like snowmobiling. “Santa’s Workshop” & the “Christmas Mall”
stores look pretty tacky with their old-fashioned giant Santa signs, but a blanket
of snow makes everything look cozy.
Michigan mitten cookies |
Other
Michigan towns have coordinated their decorations and lights to create scenic
Christmas wonderlands. Bed-&-breakfast inns create Victorian Christmas spirit. Some of them really
develop the theme with Michigan mittens & mitten-shaped cookies like
these.
What’s missing here? Oh, I know! It’s the entire Upper Peninsula!

I think I’ve
developed some Yooper attitude.
