Western Desbarats, Ontario

Ripple Rock
2,228 miles

May 5 – This section of the Trans-Canada Highway is also Highway 17.  Here, on the highway west of Desbarats, is Ripple Rock.  It was uncovered when workers blasted the rock cuts through northern Ontario in preparation for the construction of the Trans-Canada Highway.   The ripples in Ripple Rock were created two billion years ago by waves in a shallow body of water.  It was buried and through pressure it became sandstone.

Another local geological phenomenon is puddingstone, found in the area as well as at nearby St. Joseph Island. Puddingstone is a mixture of different sized grains and pebbles held together by finer sand.  The type found in this area contains red and brown pieces of jasper.  Puddingstone Road in Desbarats was named for the local puddingstone.  It’s just a fun word to say.

Less accessible, but quite intriguing, is the Desbarats Bat Cave.
