Mortlach, Saskatchewan

unused wheat elevator (2003)
          1,010 miles

Jan 3 - Mortlach is a village at the confluence of Sandy Creek and Thunder Creek (which flows into the Moose Jaw River.)

The village was named by George Stephen, the first president of the Canadian Pacific Railway, for his home parish of Mortlach, Scotland. Other community names such as Parkbeg, Caron, and Craigellachie, also come from his home parish, demonstrating how so many Scottish names appear in this area, even though many settlers were Germanic.

At one time there were over 5,700 wood grain elevators (also called prairie giants) on the prairies.   This town used to have two grain elevators next to the railroad tracks.  The Pool company’s wheat elevator stood unused for many years until its demolition in 2011.
